Q Can you advise me how to deadhead my roses please? A Many people just snap off the old flower but you really should prune back further down the stem to a bud in the leaf axil facing outwards to open up the bush.
QI have a three metre-long bed of sweetpeas which I adore for their colour and perfume. How do I get them to keep flowering all summer? A Regular picking is the answer as this makes the plant keep producing more blooms. If you stop this, they set seed and stop flowering. If you are going away on holiday, ask a neighbour to keep helping themselves.
QI have a lovely golden leylandii hedge which is now about 5ft. When should I trim it? A Leylandii is a quick growing conifer so you may need to trim it twice a year, once in July and once in October. You can’t go too far into the hedge so remember to trim little and often. Feed with a nitrogen fertiliser, such as Growmore.
QI am growing onions for the first time this year. How will I know when to harvest them? A Once you see the leaves turning yellow, this shows the onions are ripening so just bend the leaves over to encourage this. Ease the onions out of the soil and leave them on the soil for a few warm dry days before stringing them up to dry off.
Q This is the first time I have grown a hanging basket. How often should I water it? A Try to never let it wilt, so every day in the summer and if it is very hot you may need to water twice a day. Mix liquid feed with the water each time.
Q My tomato plants are very dark green and the tops are soft
